Playtest: Barracks Emperors

Saturday 20th March
20:00 – 23:00 GMT

Game designer: Dillon Burke (Housewar)

Held during: MegaCon 2021

This playtest focuses on the Balkans/Danube region of the Roman Empire circa 250 AD. The players are Legates commanding legions in one border province, or the Dux as region leader.

The main activities are operational defence of the borders against barbarian raids, discussing policy options and making tradeoffs in spending team resources, resolving mutinies, and possibly marching on Rome to replace the Emperor. Span of command is 1-3 legions per legate, plus a few vexallations (small detachments). The Dux will command the riverine fleets on the Danube. Megagame: Watch The Skies Lockdown

Saturday 20th March
12:00 – 20:00 GMT

Online adaption: Johan Olofsson, Gothenburg Megagames

Game designer: Jim Wallman, Stone Paper Scissors

Held during: MegaCon 2021

Watch the Skies, the game that introduced a whole new generation to megagames. This is a megagame about international relations, conflict and high level diplomacy. It also involves mysterious and threatening aliens from outer space. The basic premise is that unknown aliens are increasingly visiting earth to abduct, investigate, terrorise and ultimately to subvert and take over or perhaps render earth weak enough to invade. The main part of the game is about how humanity as a collection of political entities decides to react to this.

Most of all it’s a game about humanity coming together to overcome great adversity. Or a more commonly a game about nuking each other back to the stone age.

This game is the perfect introduction if you’ve never played a megagame before, and it’s one of those games that veterans come back to over and over again.

Megagame: Den of Wolves

Saturday 20th March
16:00 – 00:00 GMT

Game runner: Kurt La Rue, Splintered Realities

Game designer: John Mizon, South West Megagames

Held during: MegaCon 2021

Den of Wolves is a game investigating the interactions between politics and survival during a time of crisis. Players represent the vessels in the “Survivor Fleet” – a group of surviving vessels fleeing from a catastrophic attack. The players are attempting to survive with constrained resources and competing priorities. Some players are civilians whilst others are representing government and military elements of the fleet.

The game blends both ‘Political’ (talking and negotiating) and ‘Operational’ (decisions, units, and resources) gameplay. Some roles are exclusively Political, while others have a much greater focus on Operational matters. In general, players should expect a significant amount of resource management and player-to-player negotiation and discussion, with a small amount of unit positioning and combat.

Megagames would not occur without a Facilitation Team to run the game. The diverse group facilitating this running of Den of Wolves come to you from all across the globe and all walks of life. Think of them as Game Masters or Moderators for the Megagame.

New to megagames? Den of Wolves is a great place to start. Visit the Splintered Reality website for more details on the game.
