One of the most destructive conflicts in history: high politics and unforgiving war, causing the deaths of over eight million people through combat, violence, famine and plague.
Take on a role within one of the 8 great nations of the Holy Roman Empire, three devious trading houses out for profit or five foreign powers meddling for their own benefit, and have a hand in altering the war, or even history itself.
For all fans of the EU4 computer game, seventeenth century politics, Renaissance culture and early modern warfare, the Europa Universalis megagame focuses on the Thirty Years’ War that devastated Europe between 1618 and 1648. The new Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand II, tries to force religious uniformity and the Roman Catholic Church, on all those under his rule. The northern Protestant states rebel against the violation of their rights, and band together to form the Protestant Union.
The game is designed by Luca Kling at Paradox games, the company behind the Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings computer game series, and will be run for the first time in the UK by Johan Olofsson of Gothenburg Megagames.
The game starts at the beginning of the conflict and has eight nations with four players in each team, three trading houses with three players in each team and five foreign powers played by a single player each.
The nations are:
- The Palatinate
Each team consists of a Head of State, a Diplomat, a General and a Religious leader. (No megagame experience required to play a nation.)
The trading houses are:
- The Fuggers
- The Hansa
- The Frankfurter Handelshaus
Each team consists of a Patriarch, a Merchant and a Spy. (No megagame experience required to play a trading house.)
The Foreign Powers are:
- The Pope
The Foreign Powers players are diplomats, one for each power. (Megagame experience strongly recommended.)
